I'm thinking about hiring a caregiver, should I employ one myself or go through a licensed agency?

Most seniors prefer to stay in the comfort of their own home rather than moving to a nursing home. For families, this means hiring a caregiver to help with an aging loved one. There are two main ways to hire a caregiver. These are direct hire and through a licensed agency.

Direct Hire –Hiring directly means that you as an individual is the employer and can be held responsible for any injuries the caregiver has while caring for a loved one. A private caregiver may not carry his or her own liability insurance or workers' compensation leaving the family monetarily accountable. Background checks, references, training and supervision will also be your responsibility as the loved one paying the caregiver. You may also be accountable for payroll taxes, workers compensation, unemployment insurance and liability.

Licensed Agency (Sitters & More) - When hired, Sitters & More takes on the responsibility of being the employer to the caregiver and provides the background check, training, supervision, workers' compensation and liability insurance. Not all care agencies provide workers compensation or liability insurance, as Sitters & More does. Working with a licensed care agency such as Sitters & More alleviates you of much of the legal responsibilities of employing someone directly. These include payroll taxes, workers compensation and unemployment insurance and liability.

“We specialize in managing caregivers and providing quality care so you can specialize in loving your love one.”

How does Sitters & More screen and manage their staff of caregivers?

Sitters & More takes great pride in the fact that they are one of the few home care agencies that has achieved the designation from the State of Tennessee as a Tennessee Certified Drug Free Workplace.  In addition to all our employees being required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background checks, nurse aide registry traces (where applicable) and employee misconduct registry traces on each applicant. Every caregiver also completes an in-depth interview about prior experience. Records are retained with the caregiver employment application, resume, reference checks and work history verification. Of major importance is that caregivers demonstrate a heart for care giving, compassion and empathy for the client they serve.

Does the company withhold employment taxes and worker compensation or will the client be responsible?

All caregivers are employees of Sitters & More and the company files all applicable federal and state taxes as well as workers' compensation. You can have peace of mind in that our caregivers are not contract employees, which is often the case in home care organizations. Sitters & More strives to build long-term relationship with its team members and its clients with this direct hire approach.
